Itinerary

Day by day

  1. Day1

    Broken Hill to Cameron Corner

Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Ranges on the Silver City Highway, travelling via Packsaddle to the historic town of Milparinka. Stop at the Albert Hotel and explore the beautifully restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct, which tells the story of this once-thriving gold-mining town.

Continue to Tibooburra for a brief look around, then head into the vast Sturt Desert, crossing the Grey Range with a scenic stop at Fort Grey, where red sand dunes give way to surprising wetlands. Arrive at Cameron Corner, where the borders of NSW, SA and Queensland meet, for a welcome meal.

  2. Day2

    Strzelecki Track to Innamincka

Travel via Bollards Lagoon and the Yellow Bus to Merty Merty Station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert to the Strzelecki Track and the Moomba oil and gas fields. Along the way, pass the Geodynamics "hot rocks" project, where the Cooper Basin holds some of the hottest non-volcanic rocks on Earth.

As the sun sets, enjoy the birdlife on Cooper Creek, then have dinner at the Innamincka Hotel, beside the beautifully restored Australian Inland Mission hospital.

  3. Day3

Burke & Wills Dig Tree to Tibooburra

An early walk along the creek sets the tone for the day. Cross into Queensland to visit the historic Nappa Merrie Station and the Burke & Wills Dig Tree, where the support party waited more than four months, only to leave on the very morning Burke and Wills returned, too weak to continue.

Head south through desert and sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank, then cross the Dingo Fence at Warri Gate into Sturt National Park, home to large mobs of red and western grey kangaroos. Dinner and the night are in Tibooburra, the most remote town in NSW.

Travel south across salt lakes and open plains, arriving back in Broken Hill by late afternoon.
