Because the reality today is very different.
The Barrier Highway Is Fully Sealed
The main route from Sydney to Broken Hill — the Barrier Highway — is now completely sealed.
Every single kilometre.
In fact, many travellers are surprised to learn the drive is often easier than some major coastal routes.
You’ll experience:

It’s a relaxed and scenic drive rather than the challenging adventure people expect.

Yes, there are still dirt tracks in the Outback.

The biggest issue is that people are still working with information from twenty years ago.
Infrastructure has improved enormously.
Councils and regional governments have invested heavily in tourism access.
Roads have been upgraded specifically to make these areas easier to visit.
The Outback people imagine — rough, inaccessible, and difficult — is becoming harder to find.
Unless you go looking for it.
And most travellers don’t need to.
